The architecture of the major cities of Pakistan is such that it consists of private houses, villas and suburban farm houses that worth no less than US $ 600,000 for 500 square yards plot. This type of living is only affordable for the elite and upper middle class of Pakistan. In sharp contrast lies the lower income localities called ‘’ mohallas’’. Most of these ‘’ mohallas’’ are build on small plots. The architecture of the houses is quite opposite to the ones we see in elite areas like DHA and Bahria. In these ‘’ mohallas’’ mostly the construction of the houses is not planned at all and are mostly build to accommodate as many generations as possible. The roof is considered the prominent feature of those houses and most of the activities are planned and executed on roof top even weddings Basant. In Pakistani ‘’ mohallas’’ roof top is also used for sleeping on hot summer nights.
Since Pakistan is undergoing a severe energy crisis, architects of Pakistan are busy in designing houses that are energy efficient. The traditional Pakistani house was constructed and designed in such a way that it had verandahs, high ceilings with ventilators at the top so that the hot air can escape from there, a central court yard, two feet thick walls and clay roof insulation. But as the air conditioner started to become part of our urbanized life, the architecture of Pakistani houses and living also changed.
Architecture in Pakistan is coming back to its roots where high roofs, verandahs are commonly used to combat the scorching heat of summers. The scope of architecture in Pakistan is growing fast. The clientele has also become more informed and choosy about their living standards and styles. Foreign investments, technology and talent have contributed to the field of architecture in Pakistan.
Thus, architects of Pakistan now have more and more options to explore and execute their designed plans. They now have the opportunity to experiment the foreign models here in Pakistan. Pakistani architecture is still on its way to have a clear direction but people have now started to recognize the role of architects in the industry and this will show some fruitful results in near future.
